ASTM F 814 Test Method for Specific Optical Density of Smoke Generated by Solid Materials for Aerospace Applications

ASTM F 814 Fire test -Scope
This test method covers determination of the specific optical density of smoke generated by solid aerospace materials and assemblies, including insulated wire, in thicknesses up to 1 in. (25.4 mm) for flat specimens except for thermoplastic foams which shall be restricted to a maximum thickness of 0.5 in. (12.7 mm), and up to ¼ in. (6.35 mm) in diameter for insulated wire specimens. Measurement is made of the attenuation of a light beam by smoke (suspended solid and liquid particles) accumulating within a closed chamber, due to nonflaming pyrolitic decomposition and flaming combustion. Results are expressed in terms of specific optical density which is derived from a geometric factor and the measured optical density, a measurement characteristic of the concentration of smoke
